UNIVESITAT AUTÒNOMA DE BARCELONA

The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine was created by Royal Decree 1611/1982 on 18

June 1982 (BOE 23-1-82).

The first Dean, nominated directly by the Rector of the university, was Francesc

Puchal i Mas, a lecturer in Nutrition. The first intake of students started in October

1982 in two classrooms of the Geology section of the Faculty of Science. On the

ground floor of the same building a purpose-built dissection laboratory was

created as well as 3 offices, bone repository and an anatomy storeroom.     
      

In October 1983 the second year of classes began and new lecturers were incorporated. The new offices were opened on the ground floor of the Geology section for second year subjects. On 30 November 1983 (BOE 4-2-84) the introduction of the first cycle of the degree in Veterinary Medicine was approved.

On 24 October 1984, the Faculty Board elected the Microbiology lecturer Mª Àngels Calvo i Torras, as Dean.

With the arrival of new lecturers in the third year of the course offices and laboratories were prepared in the M-5 building of the Faculty of Medicine. The classes during the third year were also given in the classroom of the Faculty of Medicine.

In March 1985 the first two animals of the animal house were presented to the Governing Board: two cows named Claustral and Estatuta.

HOSPITAL

The Veterinary Clinic (HCV) of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona opened in 1990 with two clear objectives:

  • To offer an external high quality service to veterinary surgeons and the public.
  • To offer support to the teaching staff in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine by offering a high number of clinical cases.

The job of the HCV is based on its close collaboration with well known veterinary surgeon and its commitment to offer the best possible service to pateints and clients. Every year the HCV examines approximately 13,000 patients.

EXPERIMENTAL FARMS

The farms and experimental fields are a support unit for practical teaching and the development of lines of research generated by the Departments and Research Institutes of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, which require testing and experimentation with animals and plants.

PLANT FOOD TECHNOLOGY

The "Food Technology Plant Special Research Centre" is a special research centre of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), and it smain functions are to develop technology quality and transfer to companies in the food sector.

It also offers students of veterinary medicine, food science and technology at the UAB and third cycle students for teaching practicums.

CReSA

CReSA centralizes its activity in the facilities of the CReSA building, which incorporates a wide technological offer with capability for virological, immunological, molecular biology and microbiological studies, and constitutes a reference centre for research and giving support to administrations, as well as to other institutions and companies.​

This technological offer consists of infrastructures, equipment and highly specialized services inside a building that includes conventional laboratories, biocontention laboratories of level-3 high biological safety, and level-3 biocontention facilities for animals (BSL3), with capacity for housing farm animals and laboratory animals.​

The technological offer found in CReSA’s building includes:

  • Studies of in vitro and in vivo infection with animal pathogens, including those that require level-3 biosafety facilities (BSL-3)​
  • Development of new bacteria and virus infection models​
  • Immunological studies
  • Development and setting up of diagnosis techniques
  • Study and development of new vaccinal strategies
  • Bacteriological studies
  • Viral studies
  • Studies of veterinary products validation​
  • Epidemiological studies​
  • ​Studies of entomology (arthropod vectors of animal virus)​
